AC Gas Charging Cost: What Actually Affects the Price

"How much for a gas refill?" is one of the most common questions we get — and one of the hardest to answer with a single number, because the real cost depends on a few specific factors.

Refrigerant type

Older units use R22, which is being phased out and costs more per kg than the R32 or R410A used in newer systems. Your unit's nameplate (usually on the indoor or outdoor unit) tells you which one it needs.

Leak vs. simple top-up

A unit that's simply run low over years of normal use is a straightforward top-up. A unit that's lost gas quickly is almost always leaking — and refilling without finding and fixing the leak means you'll be back to square one within months. We always leak-test first.

Unit capacity

A 1.5-ton split needs less refrigerant than a 2-ton unit or a multi-zone VRF system, so larger systems naturally cost more to fully charge.

What a fair quote looks like

A transparent quote should separate: the diagnostic/leak-check charge, the refrigerant cost (by kg, at the current market rate for that gas type), and any repair needed if a leak is found. If a quote is a single flat number with no breakdown, ask for the itemization before agreeing.
