7 Ways to Reduce Your AC Electricity Bill This Summer
AC is usually the single biggest contributor to a summer electricity bill. A few changes can make a real difference without spending on new equipment.
1. Set it to 24–26°C, not 18°C
Every degree lower can add 3-5% to your power consumption. 24-26°C is comfortable for most people and dramatically more efficient than running it as cold as possible.
2. Clean or replace the filter regularly
A dirty filter forces the unit to work harder for the same cooling — this alone can account for a 10-15% efficiency loss.
3. Use the timer/sleep mode at night
Most ACs don't need to run at full cooling all night — sleep mode gradually reduces cooling as the night cools down.
4. Keep doors and windows closed
Obvious, but worth stating: any gap lets cool air out and warm air in, making the compressor cycle more than necessary.
5. Don't block the outdoor unit
An outdoor unit with restricted airflow (blocked by storage, plants, or a wall too close) runs less efficiently and wears out faster.
6. Service it before peak summer, not during
A pre-summer check (see our maintenance checklist) catches efficiency-robbing issues before they cost you a full season of higher bills.
7. Consider an AMC if you have multiple units
Regular scheduled servicing consistently keeps units running at rated efficiency, which shows up directly in your bill over a full year.
